Third Outside Reading

"The NFL Thrives on Mayhem, and the Brutality has Increased" Star Tribune. 9 October 2008. startribune.com 9 October 2008

This article is about the growing violence in the NFL. More and more these days, players are sacrificing their bodies to win and end up badly injured. It explores how the game has changed from when it started and how much more physical it is. One theory was expressed that people today love to watch because of the violence. This relates to The Iliad because the whole story takes place during the Trojan War. It's all about killing, and blood and guts.

The NFL does seem to be getting increasingly more violent. My brother used to play football and he, being a senior in highschool, had even begun developing habits that tore his body apart, literally and figuratively.

Men and boys these days many times develop obsessions about getting bigger and stronger, especially when they're involved in a sport that pushes them to be the best and tackle the hardest.

However, in The Iliad men are strong from feasting and fighting. There are no protein shakes involved, but there are many similarities to our modern-man's workout routine.

Our world today!? I can relate to the violence situation, during the fall i play flag football and in the past few years girls have been tackling more the simply pulling the flag. Its not just men but also women. But i completely agree

I don't know if the sport is becoming more violent, or if our perspective on acceptable behavior has changed. I agree many people like to watch football just to see the big hits, but those are rare, and boxing matches are there for that. The men playing football are doing so because it is their job and they are good at it, unlike many of the soldiers in the Trojan War who were required to fight and might not have any skill. Although I see some parallel, I don't really argree.

I agree that the NFL seems to be increasing its violence. TO Rosie's comment I agree as well. Sports today take boy younger and younger and develop them beyond their age. To make the cut now you have to be bigger, faster, and stronger, a goal which young men seen to be willing to strive for.
I see your connection to the Illiad though I think you could have taken this further into dissection. Overall I see where you are coming from here but, commenting on Ted's comment I also think that our acceptance of violence in the NFL has changed.

I totally agree that the NFL is getting more violent. You brought up great points on how it relates to the Illiad. It's frightening to think: Will all of this violence children are being exposed to affect them later in life?-Andrea L.
